Note: The base work location is Walnut Creek, CA, but will be relocated to San Ramon in fall of 2012 along with the entire PG&E Gas Operations Engineering Organization.

Department Overview

This Gas Engineering position is located within the Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan (PSEP) Engineering Section of PG&E Gas Operations. PSEP Engineering is responsible for developing, designing and managing projects to enhance gas transmission pipeline safety through valve automation, pipeline replacement, pipeline strength testing/pressure testing, and pipeline retrofits to accommodate the use of in-line inspection (ILI) tools. Over a four year period (2011-2014) our Engineering Department is projected to strength test over 700 miles of pipe, replace 185 miles of pipe, retrofit 200 miles of pipe for ILI, and automate over 225 valves. The scope of pipeline safety projects is forecasted to continue well beyond 2014.

Position Summary

This Gas Engineer position will support the Gas Transmission Valve Automation Program.

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of valve automation project engineering, including design criteria development, cost estimating, materials selection and procurement, coordination and scheduling of engineering tasks with other team members (both PG&E and Contractor), detailed design, design review, construction support, startup and commissioning support, and engineering documentation.

The successful candidate will be required to travel to various field locations throughout the life cycle of the valve automation projects for project scoping, design, permitting, bidding, construction, and operational tie-in and system commissioning. You will be required to work with PG&E engineers, project managers, and other project support staff within PG&E as well as Contract Engineering firms and construction contractors.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 years of engineering experience with natural gas/petroleum process piping and construction.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or civil engineering. Desired Qualifications
  • Registered Professional Engineer in either Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) 49CFR Part 192 codes and regulations and California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) GO 112E
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment as well as both an office and field environment
  • Must be able to work with limited supervision and guidance, both independently and/or as a member of a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Valid driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Safety: Be an advocate for safety and lead by example. Incorporate safety into designs. Ensure that safe practices and procedures are communicated, incorporated and followed in all activities and engineering work products. Safety, both employee and the public is PG&E's #1 priority!
  • Valve Automation Engineering: Valve automation will include the retrofit or replacement of existing gas transmission valves, both buried and aboveground, utilization of both pneumatic and electric valve operators, instrumentation and controls, securing power and telecommunication links that will interface with PG&E's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, remote terminal unit (RTU) design and programming. This position will support the implementation of PG&E's gas transmission valve automation program. The successful candidate will ensure that all designs meet applicable codes and gas standards and that valve automation program design standards are consistently applied.
  • Project Engineering: Includes all aspects of project engineering; development of project work scopes, engineering analysis of alternatives, coordination of land rights and permitting, overall coordination of engineering disciplines, cost estimate preparation, overseeing preparation of design drawings, material specification, material management, preparation of construction specifications, construction support, commissioning support, preparation of Operations and Maintenance Instructions and coordination/preparation of the engineering record documents.
  • Oversight of Engineering Contractors: PSEP Engineering will utilize engineering contractors to supplement PG&E engineering resources. The engineering contractors may provide both project engineering and project management services. This position will develop descriptions of the work to be performed by engineering contractors, evaluate contractor proposals, assist contractors with PG&E engineering processes and procedures and oversee the work being performed by engineering contractors.
  • Communication: You must proactively communicate with numerous organizations throughout PG&E. Specifically, Transmission System Planning, Project Management, Engineering & Estimating, Gas Distribution Engineering and Planning, Maintenance and Construction, General Construction, Real Estate Management, Materials, Gas System Operations, etc. External contacts consist of various third parties such as Cal Trans, Cities, Counties, landowners and construction contractors.
